The Master's degree program is aimed at students who wish to combine artistic practice with social commitment - on stage, in public spaces and in social and cultural contexts. The course places particular emphasis on practical and collaborative work, individual artistic development and a reflective examination of current social issues.

Special Features of the Program
The goal of the Contemporary Arts Practice master’s program is to enable students to develop a reflective, nuanced, and critical perspective on the constantly evolving field of artistic, music-related cultural participation, and to continue to develop, shape, and help define this field in an innovative, professionally, and competently. The understanding of music underlying the program is broad, interdisciplinary, and incorporates both performative and participatory artistic approaches.
The program imparts music-related, artistic, and communicative skills that aim—both practically and analytically—to develop innovative approaches to musical education and are relevant for future professional practice in various musical, performative, and social contexts.
The deepening of instrumental and vocal skills, the contribution of one’s own artistic ideas, as well as a high degree of independent conceptualization, sustained collaboration, and professional communication are expressly encouraged. Participatory projects and initiatives developed for practical application are carried out and evaluated collaboratively. Peer-to-peer formats, freely selectable masterclasses, and a diverse range of ensemble experiences characterize the program’s open curriculum.

The program requires one of the following qualifications:
- A BM or BA degree in Music Education (SII)
General requirements:
- Competence in an instrumental or vocal major
- Artistic, performative, and improvisational skills in the major and any additional minors
- A concrete idea for an artistic project with educational components that you would like to realize as part of the master’s program.
- Interest in contemporary artistic, social, and (education) policy discourses.
- Proof of German language proficiency at the B2 level (must be submitted upon enrollment!)
- Proof of a bachelor’s degree (must be submitted by September 30)

Course of studies and examination regulations
The program consists of the following modules:
- Artistic Practice
- Artistic Projects
- Management
- Music Education
- Master’s Project
In the Artistic Practice module, students develop individual musical skills and expand their artistic repertoire as well as their creative approach to musical material. Artistic practice takes place both in individual lessons and in masterclasses to foster collaborative working methods.
The fields of Performing Arts and Community Arts focus on the development of innovative workshop and performance formats, artistic-pedagogical practice projects and productions, as well as artistic initiatives for educational institutions. These are developed in close collaboration with diverse communities and foster cultural and social participation (Artistic Projects module). In addition, content on project organization, self-management, mental health, and career development imparts important practical professional skills (Management Module).
A reflective approach to aesthetic questions and discourses critical of the present, as well as engagement with methods of artistic research, support the development of an independent artistic voice (Music Education Module).
The artistic-pedagogical degree culminates in the design and implementation of a student’s own project—which may also be carried out in a team with other students, if desired. The master’s project brings together all the knowledge, experiences, and content acquired during the program.
Prospects after graduation
This degree program prepares students for careers in artistic, cultural, and social fields. These include cultural institutions, such as concert halls, orchestras, museums, foundations, cultural, community, and youth services, as well as other institutions of formal and non-formal education. In addition, a wide range of opportunities opens up in settings such as neighborhood centers, music schools, schools, daycare centers, senior centers, or in public spaces, as well as at other intersections of artistic practice and social engagement.
Graduates work on projects—either as part of existing initiatives or by launching new ones—in the fields of performing arts and community arts, in interdisciplinary and inclusive settings, either as freelancers or in salaried positions.
The degree enables graduates to combine a career as a performing artist with project-oriented artistic and educational work.
