Master of Music -
Voice Musical Theater

Preparation for the stages of this world.

The master's degree program in music theater pursues the in-depth artistic training of young singers who have already shown themselves to be talented and promising for an artistic career on stage and podium through previous studies (Bachelor of Music or Master of Voice) and an aptitude test. HfMT Cologne offers a balanced spectrum of musical, scenic and linguistic instruction. Training in essential aspects of presentation on the music market, legal background information and musicians' health are also important components.

If you have any questions about the program, please contact the relevant person(s).

Special features of the study

The goal of the program is to prepare singers with versatile training for a promising career. The Rhenish Opera Academy, with its close proximity to theaters and production facilities and its comprehensive practical stage training, can be a stable bridge into the opera business. Similarly, intensive language training and ensemble studies, as well as thorough information about professional legal issues, self-management and performance training, give the young artists excellent opportunities in international competition for a career as a soloist and as a chorister in opera and radio choirs.

Applications are submitted online via the muvac platform. All information on the procedure can be found on our application page.

Admission requirements

  • Proof of a successfully completed Bachelor's degree with voice as the main subject (artistic or voice pedagogy) or a successfully completed Master's degree in voice.

Qualifying examination

The aptitude test consists of an artistic-practical examination in the main subject. It lasts about 20 minutes and consists of different tasks. It is possible to contact the main subject teacher directly to arrange an individual consultation. Detailed information can be found in the Qualifying Examination Regulations, especially in the appendix for content requirements and conduct of the examination.

The department places particular emphasis on practical professional training, which is carried out in the department's own opera productions, but also in cooperation with renowned theaters in North Rhine-Westphalia. In their opera studios or young ensembles, selected young singers can prove themselves on the theater stage without losing contact with their teaching institute, the Cologne University of Music and Dance. Among others, there are cooperations with the opera houses in Aachen, Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund, Krefeld/Mönchengladbach, Cologne and with the Bonn Opera, where young singers from the university receive guest contracts as soloists. This complex was named Rheinische Opernakademie der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln ( Rhenish Opera Academy of the Cologne University of Music and Dance) and supports students at the Cologne and Aachen campuses who are studying singing in the Master of Music Theater and in the final year of the Bachelor of Music. Master classes and workshops with international singers are held regularly for Master students. Cooperation with the WDR Radio Choir and the Cologne Opera Choir is also firmly anchored in the university's study concept. The four-semester program is accompanied by individual and obligatory study counseling on the part of the professors.
