Master of Music -
Interpretation New Music

Practical professionalization.

This program includes chamber and ensemble music, private lessons, seminars in contemporary instrumental and vocal techniques and in the history of new and contemporary music. In addition, it teaches skills for conceiving one's own concert formats in a wide range, through collaborations with numerous partners, such as Acht Brücken, the Education Department of the Philharmonie Köln, On Netzwerk Neue Musik, the Center for Contemporary Dance, and others. Here, students have the opportunity to gain podium experience under professional conditions in performances with the ensemble ColLAB Cologne. The program aims to give special importance to the interpretation and mediation of New Music in the students' professional perspective.

Additional information

Possible majors: basically all instruments that can be studied as part of a Master of Music as well as Conducting Contemporary Music

Admission requirements

  • Successful completion of a four-year bachelor's degree or equivalent in one of the possible majors.
  • Students who did not graduate from a German-speaking institution must prove that they have sufficient German language skills (min. level A2 according to the European Framework of Reference).
  • Successfully passed qualifying examination.

Qualifying examination

The aptitude test consists of an artistic-practical examination in the respective main subject. The exam lasts about 20 minutes. Detailed information can be found in the Qualifying Examination Regulations, especially in the appendix for content requirements and conduct of the examination. For the artistic majors, we recommend that you contact the major subject teacher of your choice in good time; they will be happy to advise you personally.

The course of study provides for four modules. The core area (Module 1) is supplemented by the module Artistic-Practical Context as well as an extensive elective area, which serves to profile the students. Module 4 concludes the program with the master's thesis or project.
