The International Student Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) at Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (HfMT) advises and supports both German and foreign students in implementation of the Erasmus EU scholarship programme and the DAAD's Stibet and Promos scholarship programmes.
The International Student Office will support only students planning an academic stay abroad as part of a programme. Needless to say, you are free to organize your stay abroad yourself if, for personal reasons, you intend to study in another country for some time. In this case, too, the staff of the International Student Office will glad to provide every help they can.
For detailed information on how to plan a stay abroad please refer to www.go-out.de.
The European Union's ERASMUS programme promotes student mobility within Europe. The programme enables students to study at a partner university or college for one or two semesters.
Under the programme, a distinction is made between outgoing scholarship students (i.e., already enrolled at HfMT Köln) and incoming ones, i.e., students from a partner university or college.
A list of our partner universities / colleges is given in the service box on the right (under Downloads).
The EU's Erasmus programme offers valuable opportunities to study at a partner university or college in another European country for one or two semesters. Students holding this scholarship are exempt from tuition fees and will receive a monthly grant of up to € 300 from their home university or college.
You may submit up to 3 complete applications to Ms. Gecks by the end of February (the deadline is March 1 of each year for both semesters!).
Experience has shown that the best time for a period of study abroad is the 3rd semester year. An exchange for a complete academic year is likely to be more effective when it comes to immersing yourself into the host country's different culture, language and music scene. Given the extensive preparations this may involve it is advised to start planning just about a year before the intended departure date. Personal contacts to faculty members (academic instructors) you would like to study with at the partner university or college will be very helpful.
For detailed information on the application process for outgoing scholarships please refer to the service box on the right. More information can also be given in a personal interview. Please call for an appointment.
Incoming students – i.e., students from a partner university or college – can apply with full documents no later than March 1 of each year.
Please send your documents to Ms. Heike Gecks, Unter Krahnenbäumen 87, 50668 Köln via your International Student Office. Only full sets of application documents will be accepted.
For further information refer to the service box under Downloads on the right.
HfMT's coordinator will examine your application for completeness and fulfilment of all legal prerequisites.
Next, your documents will be forwarded to the Erasmus department reps who will then select suitable academic instructors or, if a specific instructor has been requested, will get in touch with the instructor of the applicant's choice. By mid-May, reviewed applications will be returned to the coordinator with a statement as to whether or not the given instructor is prepared to accept this student into his/her class. This should be considered a recommendation, not a decision.
At Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, a commission decides on the admission of Erasmus students. This commission convenes in late May. Accordingly, the coordinators of the partner university or college will be notified of the results in early June.
If you have been admitted as an Erasmus student you will receive a letter of admission as well as more detailed information about your stay.
HfMT's Support Office (Betreuungsbüro) will be glad to assist you with any query or problem you may have, from registration matters to finding accommodation. Please contact the support staff at betreuungsbuero(at)hfmt-koeln(dot)de.
A course catalogue for HfMT can be found under Downloads on the start page.
If you have any questions concerning your Learning Agreement you may contact your department's Erasmus representative directly.

The objective of this scholarship programme is to promote the mobility of German students. Moreover, it is intended to provide students whose project does not fit into any other scholarship programme with an opportunity to realize their studies abroad.
Out of these funds which are made available by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln provides grants for the following purposes:
An application form is provided in the service box on the right.
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides scholarships for foreign students via universities and colleges.
This scholarship is intended to enable foreign students who are going through hardship through no fault of their own to complete their studies in a focused manner.
To this end, financial support is provided for a maximum of six months.
Under the STIBET I scholarship programme, DAAD enables Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln to grant a pre-graduation scholarship. This pre-graduation scholarship is directed at all foreign students with a good academic achievement record who are about to graduate within one year's time.
In selecting beneficiaries, the following criteria will be evaluated:
