Master of Music Opera Coaching

Master of Music - Opera Coaching

The Master’s Degree Programme in Opera Coaching was reintroduced in the 2016/2017 winter semester at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz. The new programme is offered as part of the Rheinischen Opernakademie Cologne/Aachen, Department 4, Vocal Performance/Musical Theatre.

The aim of the degree programme is to provide an excellent qualification for those who are looking to work as répétiteurs in opera and musical theatre. The students have access to four highly experienced musical directors in Kenneth Duryea, Prof. Herbert Görtz, Raimund Laufen and Prof. Stephan E. Wehr, each of whom started out as solo répétiteurs and coaching directors before embarking on their respective theatre careers as classical music directors. Between them, their decades of experience working with singers, directing and organising ensembles, their knowledge and experience of teaching operatic roles, as well as their understanding of the special demands of leading coaching programmes at a theatre, offer students unique insight and tuition.

Students will gain practical experience not only through the University’s own opera productions in both Cologne and Aachen, but also in theatres associated with the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (in Aachen, Bonn, Gelsenkirchen, Cologne and Krefeld-Mönchengladbach).
