Master of Music – Choral Conducting

The Master’s Degree Programme in Choral Conducting at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln

The Master of Music programme in Choral Conducting prepares students for work with professional ensembles. The course covers the entire range of the choral repertoire, with particular emphasis on conducting technique, rehearsal methods, vocality and repertoire development. Students will have the opportunity to work with a range of professional vocal ensembles, both from the University and the wider professional world.

  • Successful completion of a four-year Bachelor’s Degree programme in Choral Conducting or other comparable degree programme.
  • Students who have not graduated from a German-speaking institution must prove that they have sufficient knowledge of the German language.
  • Successful completion of the entrance examination.

Entrance examination

The entrance examination consists of the following three parts:

  1. Practical performance test in choir conducting with a vocal ensemble (duration approx. 15 minutes);
  2. Theoretical and practical test with the examination committee (duration approx. 20 minutes);
  3. Written test assessing aural skills and composition (total duration: 4 hours)
