Master of Arts Dance Studies

Master of Arts - Dance Studies

The University for Music and Dance Cologne is one of two German universities which offers an interdisciplinary, 4-semester long MA program in Dance Studies.

How can dance be understood and researched? This question is at the heart of the MA program in Dance Studies at the Centre for Contemporary Dance in cooperation with the artistic study programs. Looking at a variety of dance practices - from artistic forms and working methods to everyday and popular culture - aesthetic, historical, political and social research perspectives are developed. The close cooperation with the renown German Dance Archive in Cologne also shapes the profile. The MA in Dance Studies offers unique opportunities for historical research and its independent implementation in practical projects in the Archives.

The MA program is considering students with a scientific interest in dance and a first university degree in the field of dance, theatre and musicology or other cultural and social sciences. The objective of the program is to impart complex thinking, historical knowledge and to promote scientific reflection of dance and body techniques in a broader aesthetic and social context.

The focus of the study program is wide and interlinks a focus methodology of Dance Studies, with the possibilities for the involvement in practical choreographic and dramaturgical projects as well as it fosters a critical engagement through post-colonial and institution-critical theories to broaden a general understanding of dance's cultural relevance. A lively discussion culture and variety of formats promote a critical and self-reflective understanding of science. Workshops introduce various formats of writing about dance and their application is tested in small publications, dramaturgical projects and collaborations with the artistic field.

The program works by means of fostering independent and thematically self-determined research by the students through individual and group projects in connection to the professional field. The CCD is part of a highly developed artistic network in NRW (including tanzhaus nrw, PACT Zollverein, FFT Düsseldorf, tanzfaktur Köln, Schauspiel Köln) and promotes contacts to the regional and supra-regional scenes as well as to university partner institutions.

The application deadline is June 1.
