Since 1997, the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln has hosted three international competitions: vocals, piano, and violin. Starting in 2011, one single competition will combine these three competitions and take place every three years. The goal of the competition is to help young musicians transition to the international stage while providing a large audience with a channel for classical music. The hand-picked panel of judges will discover new, talented musicians that can be appreciated by a large audience and the media.
The International Competitions Cologne (Internationale Wettbewerbe Köln) have been members of the “Fédération Mondiale des Concours Internationaux de Musique” since 1988 and have gained significant recognition on the international stage since their creation. This recognition is enhanced by the prize money as well as the concerts that the University plans with renowned orchestras and event organizers. The well-established prize winner’s concert at the Kölner Philharmonie, which is accompanied by the WDR Rundfunkorchester Köln, is broadcast by the WDR3 television station and also enhances the competitions’ appeal worldwide.
